Thanks to everyone for all the ideas.

For now I'm trying the idea of assigning the most recently served IP 
address to the ReplayTV as its static IP address. My experience has 
shown that the WRT54G consistently assigns this address to that device. 
I know I couldn't count on it in a more active setting, but I'm going to 
try this for awhile and see what happens. If it doesn't work then I'll 
investigate what I need to do to start using my Ubuntu desktop as a DHCP 
server.
