GNU Emacs 23.2.1 says it has a variable called
undo-ask-before-discard, which sounds related.
Or maybe buffer-disable-undo would let you disable undo on the
particular buffer you are working on, without disabling it generally.
C-h a undo will give you more ideas about what's available to tweak.
