{How much memory does your system have?}

24.7 gigabytes and almost all but 88 megabytes has been grabbed.

{If it's not being otherwise used, it might grab that much for disk
cache, but it will be reclaimed
when needed and shouldn't cause spilling to the swap partition.}

Unfortunately now the normal rate of doing tasks, like listing a
directory or editing a file have all but stopped.

{How much swap is in use when this happens?}

92k so obviously almost no swap is involved.

{If it doesn't go up then it's just normal disk caching using
otherwise unused memory. If it
does go up then there may be a problem.}

Unfortunately grabbing almost all the system memory just to do a disk
cache for copying a 24 gig file has just about left the system
useless.

Should not the command at least leave about 1 gig of memory alone? I
do confess to having a 16 processor system.

I have abandoned doing normal tasks for now, while these 24 gig files
copy, but this is a heads up for those who might try such large size
file copying.
