Rich, The wireless interface could care less about the status of the wired ethernet. The two are not mutually exclusive, nor dependent on each other. They are two separate network interfaces, with distinct hardware. Quit thinking about the wireless as supposed to do something because the wired does something. That's not how it's supposed to work.

You could have one, both or none of the ethernet interfaces running, and the system should be just fine with any of those cases. 

In fact, I would probably be diagnosing this issue with the wired ethernet running, so that I have access to network resources while I'm trying to bring up the wireless.
