I don't /think/ I'm running systemd.  It's not showing up in a 'dpkg --list
| grep systemd', or any process lists (although I really don't know what it
is, so perhaps it's elsewhere...). I do, however, have an /etc/systemd
directory, although it doesn't contain the files to modify

 Since the directory existed, and the fix referenced in the forum you
linked to amounted to uncommenting lines (and tweaking the values...) I
went ahead and created /etc/systemd/logind.conf with the following contents:

HandlePowerKey=ignore
HandleSuspendKey=ignore
HandleHibernateKey=ignore
HandleLidSwitch=ignore

then rebooted and tried a sleep/resume cycle with the lid, to no avail,
which I think supports the idea that I'm not running systemd, and the
/etc/systemd directory may be a redherring.
