Does the computer have an SSH daemon running?  If so, you could log in
remotely and restart the session manager, which should effectively
restart X.  I don't recall what session manager Ubuntu uses.  If it's
Gnome's display manager, the command would be "service gdm3 restart".
Replace "gdm3" with whatever your system uses.
