I thought of that just as I was sending the previous post. It is indeed 
possible, although Audacity sound still isn't as clean as GearPlayer. 
It's not all that onerous to do it open and resave with Audacity. I've 
done it sometimes when I'm trying to remove some other noise. I just 
tried it with the sample I was hoping to edit. The file, saved as a .wav 
has the same quality as Audacity, which is mostly clean when listened to 
through Totem. It's cleaner still played through GearPlayer.
