For the past few weeks we've been experiencing our Internet connection
(Comcast) going away and returning. I got worse so I called their tech
support. The first tier decided that they could see the modem sometimes
but would lose it, too, and concluded that I needed a new modem. So this
morning I drove over to the Comcast store in Milwaukie and got a new
one. I plugged it in but the router would not see it.

I tried my connecting my laptop running Linux Mint directly to the modem
but no joy. I tried my wife's laptop running Win7 and got connected.

Over the course of the morning I spoke with three guys from the Portland
support group. During some of those discussions I was able to connect
with my wife's laptop, but not always. I tried moving the modem to a
different cable down at the box on the side of the house (the demark in
telephone terms). That always worked for the Win7 laptop but never
worked for my Linux laptop. That was with the last fellow I spoke with.
He admitted to not being familiar with Linux, but did understand that I
could run a program like the Windows ipconfig on my Linux box. When I do
that (run ifconfig) I can see an IP6 address but not an IP4 address.
When I run ipconfig on the Windows laptop I see both an IP4 and an IP6
address.

Is there something I'm missing about getting an IP4 address from this
new modem? It's a UB D3.0.

For now I'm reduced to doing e-mail through web mail on this Win7
laptop.
