I don't think I even have a "recovery" image installed on any of my 
systems. It may be an option from the install media, but if the system 
is bootable, and you have console access, you just interrupt the Grub 
countdown at the menu list with just about any keystroke (I use the 
arrow up/down) and then follow the prompts.

Loosely, you want to select the image you want to boot, tap "e" in most 
cases to edit the boot parameters, and I generally add a "-s" at the end 
of the line with the image path, then tap "b" to boot.

That *should* get you to a root shell prompt without having to enter a 
password. From there, you may have to remount the root filesystem as 
read-write, but then you can reset the password for root as easy as if 
you were doing it in multi-user mode.
