   It's more complicated than this. I figured out why the system does not
fail at a repair shop counter, but consistently fails here. With no
distribution DVD in the optical tray it wants to boot, but is missing kmod.
When the distribution DVD is in the optical drive tray the system does not
see it and will neither boot off it nor present the LILO prompt.

   At the logo screen, I tried all 12 function keys to reach the BIOS
settings, but none worked.

   I'm sure there's a way that allows me to re-install the kmod package or to
get the system to boot from the DVD. It'll probably need to wait until the
weekend when I'm back in the office.
