I run Ubuntu on a Thinkpad X200, I whooped it up with 8g of
ram and a 500G HD. I have compiz on it so I can run several
desktops on the cube, the parts can be found all over the
place and it is fast enough to run a virtual machine of Win7
(I have run Win 7 on the bare metal and in the VM, it runs
better in the VM, Linux hides the hardware from it making
it reasonably nice to run in that environment. I have the
large battery pack, but I have never run it to "Ack I am
dying, do something ! so I can not say how long it will
run, but I have run it on several flights of 4 hours and still
had battery left for more.
The one I am doing this on I picked up for $165 on Ebay.
great box and it is 64b processor.
The one I have at home has the Arduino software on it,
I have run it a couple of times and talked to the Arduino
so I know it works, but I have not had a chance to set
down and really start hacking on it.
But I am quite happy with the X200, built like a battle
ship and really take a lot.
The only thing I have had to replace on one is the CPU
fan or cooling unit, and I think I found one on EBay for
less than $30.00
