asus_wmi is a kernel module that gives the operating system the
ability to control various proprietary hardware bits on the netbook
(radios, backlight, etc.).

It appears that something has gone wrong with the relationship between
asus_wmi and your netbook.  Did you recently upgrade the kernel?  I
recall backlight issues with the 3.13 kernel that eventually went away
with a later release.  Does Ubuntu offer a newer kernel for the 12.04
release?
