Cons:
1) It is heavy. At about 5 kg I can carry it around, but if you
add textbooks, notebooks, and other paraphernalia of life
today, it is a lot to schlepp around.
2) It is big. Won't fit in most backpacks. I bought a separate
bag for $25 at Fry's.
3) The power brick is bigger than some entire computers, and
heavy, and expensive.
4) It is a niche market. This is not a Thinkpad where spare
parts abound for a song.
The pros:
1) It is amazingly customizable. There are two hard drive bays
and two mSATA slots. Today you can populate it with 3 TB, and
as capacity increases you can add even more.
2) You can get cutting edge components - the latest nVidia
chips, Intel i7 CPUs, up to 32 GB RAM, etc.
3) System76 is Linux only; they ship with straight Ubuntu, but
all the components should work with any distro. You are
supporting open source vendors.
4) System76 service and support has been excellent, although my
current video problem may tax their abilities. Ubuntu has a
complete forum just for System76, and System76 monitors it and
responds just about daily.
5) It is damn freakin' fast. If I disable the login screen mine
boots from cold to ready to go to work in eight seconds. With
the login screen it boots to login in about seven seconds, and
after I enter my password and hit enter the screen is ready in
just one second more.
Overall I am very pleased and can't wait to get mine back.
