Last night I watched the progress of "rsync" on this drive and saw I/O 
errors, so I ran "e2fschk" on the external hard drive partition and many 
problems came up.

This problem is the cause of the umount failure.

I am going to have to keep an eye on this drive for possible media 
corruption in the future (or just replace the drive).
