[PLUG] Locale set to en_US.UTF-8, but cannot view UTF-8 file [UPDATE]

Try setting LANG=en_US.UTF-8.
LANG=C causes the problem which is an issue setting up some communication
bus used by gnome-terminal
make sure LANG is correctly set *before *you start your first gnome-terminal
