[PLUG] problems w/ desktop ubuntu 14.04 machine

You are correct.  The only connection to the monitor I am using is the dvi
port.  That is all that I have ever used, and the cable has not been
moved.  The problem of fat icons I assumed was due to a decreased
resolution (true) and I called it vga (wrong).  But the immediate problem
is that I cannot get the menu on the monitor to display now that it is set
to hdmi.  I would have expected that the menu would display regardless of
what mode is set.  Could this be a fault in the monitor?  Time to search
for the monitor manual to see how to reset it to dvi.  Power off did not
cure it.

Random button pushing has only made my problem worse.
