[PLUG] Machine won't boot from USB drive

I've downloaded the Ubuntu MATE 18.04 iso file, copied it to a USB
stick, and am trying to replace my old Ubuntu 14.04. But I can't get the
machine to boot from the USB drive.

I have an Asus motherboard. I click F2 to enter the UEFI BIOS
configuration utility and find Boot Configuration. With Fast Boot
Disabled, down at the bottom the Boot Option Priorities is set to Boot
Option #1, UEFI: SanDisk. I hit F10 to Save, and it boots from the hard
drive. I've asked Mr. Google for advice, but all the hits I get are for
slightly different versions of the BIOS I have.

From the UEFI BIOS Utility - Advance Mode screen I see that I have BIOS
Version 0904 x64, build date 01/06/2014.

I would appreciate a clue stick to point me in the right direction so I
can proceed with my installation.

Thanks.
