So I matched the printer model, but what I didn't do is was check the
HPLIP version. On Ubuntu I have 3.17.10. And, as you note below, on
Slackware I have 3.16.5. Sigh.

I followed the link to https://launchpad.net/hplip and asked my
question, the one for which I received no answer.

That's good to know. I'll get by for now, but it will be nice to be able
to scan with xsane again.
