It turns out that the soldered in CMOS battery on the Toshiba Satellite
L45 laptop is rechargeable. The laptop needs to be turned on for 24
hours to charge the battery. I discovered this while searching for info
on where to find the battery so I could consider changing it. I left the
laptop running overnight. I powered down and removed the Li battery,
took off the little covers on the bottom, didn't see the battery,
downloaded the User's Guide from the Toshiba site and searched for CMOS.
I found that they call this one the RTC battery (Real Time Clock.
Anyway, here's the instructions for charging this battery:

To recharge the RTC battery, plug the computer into a live electrical
outlet and leave the computer powered on for 24 hours.

So, all appears to be well with this little guy, except for how slow it
boots. It's only got 1 gig of RAM. It can take 1 gigs, and would only
cost me about $32, but I probably won't need it for its end use, which
is playing recorded music.
