VirtualBox doesn't see it, nor does it not see it; that is, there is no
way to tell. It's not like there is a 'browse' option to navigate to
the device. I have no way to be sure that what I entered is correct or
even that it is in the right slot in the GUI.

Part of the problem is that I don't know if the reader (built into the
side of the laptop) is USB or not. But if it is USB that may be the
source of the problem, because I can't get any other USB devices to
appear either.

When I insert the card into the slot it appears in Xubuntu; I can
browse the contents, manipulate the partitions with Gparted, etc. I can
also insert it into a USB adapter, and again, it appears in Xubuntu.

The net is full of talk about problems getting USB devices to appear in
VirtualBox guests, with most queries unresolved. I did find one post
where the user had an almost identical problem to mine and, while there
was no solution, he gave lengthy data from using VirtualBox at the
command line. I didn't even know there were command line options, so
that is my next avenue to explore.

The card contains medical data that I need to view in a Windows
program. Unfortunately, the program expects to find the data in a
separate drive, not in a folder somewhere. The Windows 10 guest shows C
(the VDI) and D (the optical drive). This device should show up as an E
drive, but so far no luck.
