Is ~/mail is a directory or a file? I assume the former. If so, do you
have the MAILDIR variable defined?
MAILDIR=$HOME/mail
The reason I ask is that in the error messages you list below, I'd
expect to see a full path (not just a folder name) in the "Error while
writing" messages.
