More research revealed the problem and offered one (of two) solutions.

The problem is that the Xerox Phaser 6000B driver is for only 32-bit
systems.

One owner disassembled Dell's MacOS driver and recompiled the source on his
system (64-bits). Has anyone here done this?

The other solution is to install AlienBOB's compat32 suite of 32-bit
equivalent packages for 64-bit systems.

I'll look at the Mac driver and then probably install the compat32 suite
(which will also allow me to run acroread, also a 32-bit closed-source
application.)
