fair enough, still would not trust some random vendor's hardware raid0
implementation to provide the best performance compared to an open
source software solution.

hdparm commands probably won't work through a raid controller
like that. If it's spindown that's really causing the issue (doesn't
sound like it as he said disks were rumbling not whirring up) he would
probably need to find the manufacturer specific way to adjust timeouts.
