It's not necessarily counterfeit, given I used in over 2 MS OS versions
with reliable performance connecting to the serial consoles of a number
of laboratory gadgets.  The Prolific web site did have a warning about
counterfeit chips, but also had a statement that earlier versions for
the PL2303 no longer have driver support.  It would have been nice if
they had also updated the device ID as it does not seem they did so.
