Is installing a different DE an option?

GNOME 3 forces hardware acceleration by default. If it falls back to
software rendering, you will notice. It's incredibly slow when hardware
acceleration is not enabled. Disabling KMS doesn't actually disable HW
accelerated graphics for X11 so you might want to switch to something like
XFCE that provides a toggle for compositing. If these issues really are
related to then GNOME is not the DE you want to be using.

Last I checked, all other desktops provide a way to disable the compositor,
resolving a lot of issues on older embedded graphics chips.
