To track system activities in real time use gkrellm <gkrellm.srcbox.net>. I
have an instance running on each virtual desktop and it displays CPU
activity (collectively for the 16 cores on this desktop), disk activity, and
eth0 activity. You can configure it to track whatever you want. I find it
very useful.
