There are two different actions we're discussing. Firmware upgrades are done
from the console, or a DOS 'window' in Microsoft-world. It's been a few y
years since I did this but I boot the laptop from the DOS-formated flash
drive which has (I think) DOS-6.x installed. Then I run the firmware .exe
file with the GPS attached to another USB port. I'll check the details
before doing this, of course.

Map upgrades usually can be done using only the Garmin Camp GUI. And we need
to pay for it.

Perhaps multistate OSM maps can be put in separate diretories on the SD card
and selected when the GPS is turned on. Haven't tried this, though.
