That error message you got in the GUI sounds really strange. I've never seen that before and I tend to mess around with most of the mainstream DEs.

Since xrandr is fine you might want to install something simple like fluxbox to see if it gets the resolution right. Also an easy way to isolate any issues caused by your DE.
