Hello Portland Linux users,

At the Institute for Computing in Research, high school students are
training to be researchers, through weekend workshops and a paid summer
internship program, while learning, using, and creating open-source
software. I have been working with a small group of volunteers to bring the
Institute to the Portland area. Our inaugural Portland-area internship
program is happening from August 2 - 20, 2021!

Please consider filling one of our volunteer roles; these roles help maximize
the internship experience for our talented, motivated and diverse students.

Be a MENTOR: This is light duty! Meet initially (in person or virtually) to
help a youth decide on a research topic. It could be a pet project of yours
or an existing open-source software project, possibilities are limitless.
Check-in with the student several times a week (8/2 - 8/20) to discuss
their project (in person or virtually) - once or twice per week or more,
everyone has their own style. You don't provide general programming help or
daily support, others take care of that.

Be a GUEST LECTURER: give one talk at the Institute this summer! Typical
lectures involve highlighting your area of expertise and presenting a
related computational problem that students can follow and learn from.
Guest lectures are typically Tu/Th 10 am but we can work around your
schedule. RSVP now to choose a date that works for you!

Visit https://computinginresearch.org/mentors/ for more information, see
the attached flyer, and contact Mark Galassi (voice) 505-629-0759 (yes,
area code is 505, not 503) or pdx at computinginresearch.org if you are
interested.

Sincerely,
Sharon
