This company is in the process of evaluating a new version and wants "real world" people to provide feedback and make design recommendations. The product evaluation is informal. It will involve experienced software developers who currently hold, or have held, a position where software development is/was a significant portion of their responsibility. In addition, candidates also need to meet the following criteria: - programmed in C++ for at least a year, - written code in a professional environment for longer than six months, - developed C++ code within the last month, - worked with Linux or Unix, - not purchased a C++ compiler in the last year, - perform a number of C++ tasks [hence the questions about experience.] Evaluation sessions are held in Hillsboro and will run approximately two hours. Each participant will receive $100 honorarium as compensation for their time. Session times available are: - Monday, May 23rd, morning [8am]. - Tuesday, May 24th, afternoon [3pm]. - Wednesday, May 25th, morning [8am], noon [12pm], and afternoon [3pm]. If you meet the preliminary qualifications and are available to participate, please contact me ASAP. Leave a voicemail at tollfree 877.638.3282 x212. Indicate the message is for Susan and is about the Compiler Study. Make sure you include your name, phone number, and a time I can contact you to complete a few minutes of preliminary screening questions. Free Geek is a not-for-profit community technology center in SE Portland. We are run by a non-heirarchical worker collective with direction and guidence from a volunteer run council. Free Geek is a linux shop, but these are not programming jobs, or anything quite like that. Nevertheless, PLUGgers might be interested, or know someone who is. These are both paid positions. One is the 3-6 month Thrift Store Sales Intern, and the other is the long term collective member Recycling Program Coordinator. Both jobs have deadlines of June 6, 2005. Both are slated to start on June 21, 2005. Please do not reply to this email. The engagement would approximately 3 months. The consultant would be expected to be on-site in Northwest Portland 8 hours a day during normal business hours, Monday through Friday during the engagement. We have a system that is getting beat into the ground by a bunch of shell scripts doing things like sending/receiving files via FTP, creating new files in a directory that already contains 100,000 other files, and running the "find" command over millions of files repeatedly. The consultant would be engaged to solve the performance issues created by these unwise practices. We need someone with the following: + Good understanding of Perl and Perl performance optimization + Writes Perl that can be understood by Perl beginners + Understands details of how the Veritas filesystem performs + Can identify "hog" scripts using typical UNIX tools + Understands the UNIX internals behind shell scripting enough to identify commands that are likely performance bottlenecks + Can "triage" which scripts should be optimized first so as to give the best return on our consulting dollar + Familiar with the HP products Measureware and GlancePlus (optional) This job would involve only a minimal amount of Linux. However, many PLUGers are also well-versed in HP-UX and other flavors of UNIX, so I don't think this offer would be wasted on this list. Please send resumes to careers at menloworldwide.com. You may CC: me on them at gluv31702 at sneakemail.com if you have specific questions. Only use this E-mail address for resumes or questions on this position as this address will likely be disabled shortly. Consultants will be expected to work through one of Menlo Worldwide's approved contracting agencies here in Portland. Recruiters are welcome to respond, however be sure that your candidate has the necessary skills to the depth I'm looking for. You have probably noticed that I did not list any "years of experience"; assume that I'm looking only for very, very senior folks. ;-) As I come up with clarifications to this I may post followups-- look for them before asking questions.
