[PLUG-JOBS] File system space troubles

In an attempt to install hp printer software on my friend's Debian box I
ran into an unexpected problem that I don't know how to solve.

I'm seeing this messages when I try to use tab complete:

"cat /etbash: cannot create temp file for here-document: No space left on
device
bash: cannot create temp file for here-document: No space left on device"

and when I try to login as root to a directory in thunar file manager I get
an error about not enough space to copy the user's xauthorization file.

It's fairly obvious what the problem is:

However, the obstacle to solving this problem is that I can't seem to get a
useful listing of current file space utilization from either Thunar nor
command line so that I can determine what to move or delete.

I found a few files in the /tmp directory that were a few hundred MBs.

Is there a better gui tool or command that will provide a better break-out
of files and their space usage?
