Sending a message to a public forum is "whining" if the message contains
"whining". There is no particular forum that can make whining somehow not
whining.

You were. You were making a passive-aggressive comment instead of coming
out and making a request.
You want the list closed, but instead of asking someone to close it (or
how you could go about closing it yourself), you just wrote what you
wanted.
You know the intent was to get someone to make your wish come true, but
you didn't come right out and say that. It's like the little kid that
stands next to the adult eating licorice and says, "I wish _I_ had some
licorice." It's fucked-up and just plain rude.
If you want someone to do something for you, ask, preferably with "please"
and "thank you".
No man is an island unto himself. Asking for help is not a sign of
weakness.
And rather than just bitching about your situation, take some control over
your world and try to change it. If that fails, of course, go ahead and
bitch. But I think John just proved that it wouldn't have taken much more
effort to fix the situation than to complain about it.
