There can never be too much discussion. I'm just happy we saved the
discussion from its original misbegotten directions about the
political exploitation of a woman's death.

Ahhhh... You are baiting me, aren't you?!?

You're saying that synthetic artifacts (like telescopes, mathematics,
etc.) are somehow distinguishable from naturally occurring artifacts!

You sneaky little #@$%^@#. This is a subversive attempt to log factoids
for later use... later when we inevitably get into the argument of
intelligent design and the clockwork universe.

Well, I'm onto you, buddy. There is NO difference between "artifiacts
used to observe other artifacts" and "the artifacts themselves". Nuh-uh.
You're not going to catch me on that one.

Speaking of which, we recently moved off our old server... (To
PDXColo.net... They are very cool and I highly recommend them.) Our
old hosting people gave us a very small partition for "/var". Is that
normal? It strikes me that /var, being the partition for "variable"
data, should be quite large. To boot, linux distributions seem to put
things like www and mail in there, implying that the partition should
be large. Why would anyone want a small /var?

p.s. Sorry for talking about linux on plug-talk... I can move this
question to the other list if anyone cares.... but it's on-topic, I
think because I really won't _use_ the info I get from the answers...
making the discussion useless... therefore making it "random and
time-wasting".... although I don't really think it's "random".
