I never said anything about "friendliest". The proposal I was
responding to was to automatically reject messages based on presense
of "offensive words" or automatically filter "offensive words" out of
messages. You can do the former with long-ago-invented procmail and
the latter with the long-ago-invented /bin/sed.

You don't have to go that far. I made this proposal a few years ago
to the pro-moderation folks, basically: moderate yourself. Usually
the argument against moderation is that it is labor intensive for the
moderator and that it introduces a lag that slows/hinders
communication. My proposal is for a pro-moderation advocate, someone
motivated to do that job, to set up *their own mailing list* that
forwards messages from the regular lists deemed worthy to their
moderated lists. Posts to the moderated list could be forwarded on to
the main list either automatically, or also via the moderator. When
you've got it working smoothly, invite people to join your
family-friendly-according-to-micheal-robinson mailing list and
discover how many people care.
