[PLUG-TALK] Where to find legit used copy of M$ Visual C 4.0?

You can download the Express editions of Visual Studio 2005 for free and you
shouldn’t have to register to use them. I don't know if they do Visual C,
but they do Visual C++, so I would imagine ANSI C should work as well.

I've only used it for one class where it was required, so I am by no means
an expert. I think unless you are doing a lot of work with the CLR functions
of MS C, then everything should work fine with the Express edition and if
you are porting, you want to get rid of that anyhow. Its worth the 80Mb
download to try and see if it meets your need anyhow.

To the rest of you offended by the mere mention of M$ on PLUG-talk
... well, er, you are right. I hope to escape the slime pit soon!

It's late and maybe I don't know the right place to look at
the MSDN website, but it appears from:

http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/list.aspx?view=22&pcid=515c9859-958b-

... that they don't go back very far; one or two versions perhaps.
Is there someplace to find the older stuff? Beyond the cost of the
Visual tools suite ($300?) and MSDN Library ($200/yr), what does
this cost?

I would rather buy a PLUG member's old version of Vis.C++ 4.0 for
$80 or so, and keep the money within our community, if I can do
so legitimately. At least I don't have to inform Redmond of my
existence if I do that; I worry that the recent stuff requires
net activation, and may barf if run with a VMWare W2Ksp4 instance.
