Ta-da! A bit of research on the manufactuer's web site and I learn the
reason they put a second male USB connector on the cable is for additional
power.

So, with both cables in their USB ports, /proc/partitions/ shows that
/dev/sda and /dev/sda1 are present. Nice.

Keith: I can now attest that the Bytecc USB 2.0 Drive Mate and the AirLink
101 model AEN-U25H work with linux. AirLink also makes larger drive
enclosures; their web site is www.airlink101.com.
