While it would almost certainly be fun to build your own antenna, that
activity among wireless groups has fallen off substantially in recent
years. The test equipment required to find out whether and where
you've got rf leaks is prohibitively expensive, and good quality,
high-gain, professionally-constructed-and-tested antennas are
comparatively inexpensive these days.
What your friend really needs is someone with the gear to come out and
discover whether the link is at all viable. If so, then your friend
can figure out what it would cost to set up and decide whether it is
worth it. Spending the money up front with substantially more
uncertainty going in, seems a less compelling investment.
