[PLUG-TALK] MUAs and "Mail Opened" Indicator

I was chided by an associate for not using Lookout! ... er, Outlook, so I
could determine whether recipients of email messages had opened and
(presumably) read the message I sent. My explanation that I've used nothing
Microsoft for more than a decade fell on deaf ears.

But, this brings up two questions:

   1) Can outlook determine if the message has been opened when the
recipient's MUA is pine, mutt, elm, Thunderchicken, Sylpheed, or something
other than Outlook?

   2) Is this capability of determining whether recipients have seen a sent
message available in any other MUA?
