I've bought several sets of brushes from Faulkner Auto Electric in NW
Portland. I've always been shopping for auto-related electric motors
(starters, alternators), but they might be worth a try. If you take in
what remains of the original brushes, they may be able to find
something suitable, or at least close enough. The carbon material that
most brushes are made of is fairly soft, and can be easily sanded into
shape if they don't fit quite right. I don't think I've ever paid much
more than ~$5 for a set of brushes.
