Sysadmins often do the same thing with their preferred machine
vendors.
There are cynical reasons for this practice, of course, but the less
suspicious view is that it reduces the number of variables to worry
about when bringing a new server online. The sysadmin is acquainted
with the quirks of his/her platform of choice and has confidence it
will be well behaved when treated within certain boundaries.
It wouldn't surprise me at all to hear that mechanics and plumbers
have the same modus operandi: they just want to reduce the number of
troubleshooting variables when doing their work.
