Not so unique as you would think. Most mammals exhibit this in the protection of their infants. Some birds do the same.
In almost every way that man has tried to set himself apart from the rest of the animal kingdom, examples have been found to show that this is nothing but arrogance on the part of man.
I personally have had pets who go through a mourning period (i.e. they miss someone). Examples are, when my son moved out, or when my girlfriend goes to work. No, they do not appear as profound as in humans, but it's happening none the less.
