Maybe y'all can help me figure out what good these petitions do?  I can 
see that it might help people like Wyden judge how much public support 
they might get in pushing for new laws or an amendment.  But does it do 
anything else?

Petitioning to, say, get an initiative on a ballot or launch a recall or 
something makes sense to me.  But these petitions seem like a kind of 
political placebo... they may make you feel better, but do almost 
nothing else.

Am I wrong?
