Two Kaiser Permanente bioengineers and their research on
the hazards (and opportunities) for augmented reality
(Google Glass, etc.):

This is related to a discussion of alert fatigue in the
excellent recent book "The Digital Doctor" by Robert Wachter.
That book discusses the life-threatening high-distraction
environment of most electronic medical record systems, and
contrasts them to the heavily engineered and psychologically
optimized cockpit information environments of aircraft.

When bad computer environments distract people away from
life critical tasks, the designers of those environments
may find themselves in deep legal doodoo. When careless
interface designers are imprisoned for manslaughter, that
will finally force them to take professional responsibility
for minimizing distraction, rather than creating it.
