Original subject: Sometimes you have to love Microsoft.  Then I came to my senses. 

I'm freshly returned from vacation. Had four SD cards with photos loaded. 

for each card
  insert 
  mount 
  mv /run/media/*/*/*/*JPG /srv/photo/trip_du_jour

After that was done I discovered the camera I was using reset the file name counter every time I swapped SD cards.

Oops.
Big oops.

Ah, but SD cards use FAT32
FAT32, doesn't delete files in any real sense. It just marks their space as available. Undeletion is semi-trivial.

Saved by the filesystem!
