Well, in such a scenario the first thing I would think of would be
the fact that not all merchants are honest. At any stage in the game,
all it really takes is for your credit card information to go through
one untrustworthy set of hands. I knew about people in high school who
bought full receipts from a guy who went to class with them who worked
in a mall. They'd call in orders for things, it was before the
internet had taken off massively for e-commerce, but I think there was
some mail-order involved also. They'd usually target gold or platinum
card purchases and try to get merchandise worth the low triple digits,
something that might 'slip past' on a less fiscally restrained person's
budget. I never saw any of them get busted, but I certainly did see a
lot of them walking around with free new stuff.
Just because people work for a merchant doesn't mean they're
trustworthy. Just my thoughts on the issue...
