Tom,

   Yes, I read somewhere that the country preferred a one-word name.

   I remember this quite well. A good friend (and Czech speaker) was
stationed in Germany near the Czech border and rotated back to the US a few
months before I was. He wasn't home more than two weeks when he was pulled
back and told to reactivate his network in (then) Czechoslovakia. He was
still there when I left Germany in August.

   When we'd get together for Friday dinners in New Haven we'd try to
understand the situation.
