Just to follow up on this, I bought an HP30b on either amazon or ebay
and reflashed it with the wp34s firmware. And yesterday Galen and I
flashed one for him.  

If anyone is interested, I now know how, more or less.  There is an
Amazon seller with the 30b for $40 at the moment.

You also need a $5 keypad overlay from a guy in TX (I have one spare),
but otherwise, I have the bits you need to reflash.
