Paul,

   I think you found the answer. For some reason, GPT is the default with
14.2 and I had no problems with it on the 64-bit Dell Latitude E5410 and the
Lenovo ThinkPad X200. But, on the 32-bit Dell Latitude 2100 it seems to be
the problem.

   When I deleted all partitions and re-ran cfdisk the system told me that
GPT partitions and UUIDs don't work and I need to use parted to partition
the disk. This must be a 32-bit only issue as it did not come up with the
other two portables.

   Looking at parted -help shows me commands, but not how to use them to
partition the disk. So, a web search is about to be done.

   Will get this going then go back to work; will report results later today
or tomorrow morning.

   Thanks for your excellent detective work. I would never have thought of
this since it had not bitten me before.
