[PLUG-TALK] External hard drive adapter

I have a small external hard drive adapter with a USB male end on a short
cord and a square, flat plastic box on the other end. The box has a male
connector with two parts. One part fits the 15-pin side of the drive's
connector and the other part fits the 7-pin side.

When the adapter is attached to both a naked hard drive and a USB port the
two lights on the adapter (red and blue) light up but /var/log/messages
shows no kernel recognition of the drive.

Is there a power cable missing or is such a simple adapter just not working?
