2.5 inch is the (supposed) diameter of the disk platter
inside the outer case; 2.75 inch is the width of the
outer case that contains it. 

Three "2.5 inch" drives out of my spares drawer measure
2.749" (Western Digital), 2.751" (Hitachi), and 2.747"
(Seagate) wide with my dial calipers, so 2.75 inch is
a good approximation.

Someday, one of these drives will terminally misbehave, and
I will bring it to Clinic for a public shaming, execution,
and autopsy.  For the execution, I'll wire the 5 volt drive
power connector to a wall plug through a 15 amp circuit
breaker.  Place on asbestos pad, cover with clear plastic
box, stand back, plug in.  When the smoke clears, we can
disassemble and measure dimensions of the charred remains.
